The Berm

Thanks to Tim, Mom, JR, Heath, Liz, Cat and Zach, the berm is finally done! It took a couple of weeks to finish, but I think it looks great. At the beginning, Tim and I were a little hesitant to dig up so much of the grass, but with my mother's persistence and reassurance that it would look great, we charged forward. I am very thankful we listened to my mother, she was right, it does look great. (Aren't they always right?)

Last year my mother gave us some trees that would eventually "go in the corner berm," but since we didn't dig out the grass last year for the berm, we just had to put them in the ground. So here is a photo of what the two little trees looked like last October, pretty close to where they are in the current corner berm.

All the horrible, HORRIBLE witch grass is gone! Thanks Tim!

After a load of fill dirt and a load of mulch we finally got to plant!

Cat and I went to some plant nurseries and picked out all the plants with the exception of a few that I already had. The wonderful, beautiful plants in the berm:

(1) Redtwig Dogwood
(2) Yellowtwig Dogwood
(2) Coral Beauty Cotoneaster
(1) Lavendar
(1) Austrian Black Pine
(1) Read Leaf Maple
(1) Fir (I think... mom gave me this tree and for some reason I can never remember exactly what it is!)
(3) Blue Star Jumiper
(1) Lupine
(2) Echinacea (pink coneflower)
(1) Massachusetts Kinnikinnick

It is a packed little berm, but it will take awhile for things to fill in. In a couple of weeks, I plan to plant some annuals to bring in some color and in the fall we will be planting some tulips!

Here are some pics of my favorite plants I have planted in my yard:

it looks beautiful! way to go. isn't it fun to see hard work pay off?
I think your corner looks awesome, Emily! It truly has the Clason touch! (What did Zach do? Or did you mean Cat and Dan?) P.S. This is Aunt Mitch. I want to change the name on my account but can't figure out how.

oh how lovely! nothing like the clason clan to get the yard looking beautiful!
Hey Em! Your family has always had the special Clason touch. Your berm looks great and it gets me excited to start on our new place in Portland.

Wow, good job! We just moved into our house a few months ago and we have SOOOO much yard work. I loved winter because I didn't have to do anything in the yard. Now it's spring and and I can't keep up. Weeds have taken over our yard and there's NO way that I can do it all myself. Anyways, your yard looks great! Can we switch? :)

First and foremost: the "berm" (wow, such fancy terminology) looks amazing. It really ads a diverse element to your yard and it gives it all kinds of personality.
Second, I don't know if you remember me...but I asked you a while back if you would create a cute header or title or whatever for my blog. Remember?
Anyway, let me know if you are still up for that and what you need/want from me.
Thanks, Emily!

what the? who is that? anyway, I was going to say that your berm looks awfully familiar, it even makes your house look more like our beloved first home (tear). Congratulations. Can't wait to see that thing in full glory later this summer (through pics of course, unless I'm in the neighborhood). WOW!

Em, your yard has completely changed because of that berm. It looks like it has depth and design. And those plants! Good grief they are awesome. I can't wait to see it in the summer.
